Atlanta to Host Super Bowl 53

Where is Super Bowl 53 Going to be At?

As NFL teams gather for mini-camps and two-a-days, those in Atlanta are preparing to host Super Bowl LIII. The only performance enhancing drug they need? Caffeine. The game is scheduled for February 3, 2019 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The city of Atlanta is no stranger to Super Bowls – they played host in 1994 and 2000. More recently, they hosted this year’s College National Championship, an overtime thriller that left Alabama fans yelling “Roll Tide.” As for Georgia fans? It was more of a “Roll Tears” situation.

Of course, the location of the Super Bowl is always of interest to the local team – if the Falcons make it to the Big Game as they did in 2017, they’ll play at home, an unprecedented occurrence sure to offer an advantage. CBS holds the broadcasting rights, setting the stage for an onslaught of jokes about Tony Romo finally making it to a Super Bowl.

Why did the NFL Chose Atlanta?

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is new: it opened less than a year ago. This played a role in the NFL’s decision to award Atlanta its bid. Miami, New Orleans, and Tampa were considered as well. The former was awarded the 2020 Super Bowl while the latter will host in 2021.

Not surprisingly, everyone wants to host the Super Bowl. Your Great Aunt Edna who always insists you come to her house for dinner? That’s every NFL city. This makes the competition stiff and allows the NFL to be particularly brazen in their demands.

The biggest things they look at are the condition of the stadium and the city’s ability to host. There is weather bias too: sure, Minnesota hosted in 2017, but their stadium has a dome. This assures fans comfort no matter what Mother Nature is doing outside.

The requirements set by the NFL in regards to Super Bowl cities were leaked a few years back. Some things are practical and sensical (local law officers must be provided to the NFL) and others are possibly overreaching (team hotels must televise the NFL Network for one year leading up to the Super Bowl). And some are downright diva-like (the NFL must have access to three golf courses and two bowling alleys of top quality). The Late Great Dwight Clark sporting a coyote fur coat after the Niners won Super Bowl XVI? Some demands are kind of like that.

Why does Everyone Want to Host the Super Bowl?

The competition to host the Super Bowl remains fierce, even with all the above. Why? Because hosting a Super Bowl provides automatic advertising to the millions upon millions of people watching at home. There’s a reason people work night and day in the host city making it look as pretty as possible: it must look good for its big moment.

The Super Bowl isn’t just about advertising the town and local attractions; it’s about advertising everything – everything and everywhere! Billboards, taxis, pedi-cabs – major sporting events are marketing marvels. They’re a fast way to expose your brand to fans on foot and those in front of the TV screen. In the meantime, we all wait for the 2018 NFL Season to kickoff. There are no bragging rights yet – until that first game ends, everyone is undefeated.
